Born in Portland, Maine, and educated at Bowdoin College, Longfellow's ambition was always to become a writer; but until mid-life his first profession was the teaching rather than the production of literature, at his alma mater (1829-35) and then at Harvard (1836-54). His teaching career was punctuated by two extended study-tours of Europe, during which Longfellow made himself fluent in all the major Romance and Germanic languages. Thanks to a fortunate marriage and the growing popularity of his work, from his mid-thirties onwards Longfellow, ensconced in a comfortable Cambridge mansion, was able to devote an increasingly large fraction of his energies to the long narrative historical and mythic poems that made him a household word, especially Evangeline (1847), The Song of Hiawatha (1855), The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858), and Tales of a Wayside Inn (1863, 1872, 1873). Versatile as well as prolific, Longfellow also won fame as a writer of short ballads and lyrics, and experimented in the essay, the short story, the novel, and the verse drama. Taken as a whole, Longfellow's writings show a breadth of literary learning, an understanding of western languages and cultures, unmatched by any American writer of his time.

Number of Pages: 40

Dimensions: 0.13 x 9.26 x 9.82 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: March 01, 1996

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Paul Revere's Ride

Interest Level: Middle Grades, 4-8

Reading Level: 5.6

Point Value: 0.5

Report copyright infringement

by Homer (Author), Allen Mandelbaum (Translator)

Homer's epic chronicle of the Greek hero Odysseus' journey home from the Trojan War has inspired writers from Virgil to James Joyce. It is written in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas' wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half treats the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad; Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas' wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous piety, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or nationalist epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, glorified traditional Roman virtues and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty

Number of Pages: 104

Dimensions: 0.25 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: March 30, 2017

Report copyright infringement

by Robert M. Although the first manuscript of Beowulf dates from around the year 1000 CE, it is thought that the poem existed in its present form from the year 850. Beowulf's adventures themselves stand in front of the wide historical canvas of 5th and 6th century Scandinavia. Against this heroic background of feuding and feasting, Beowulf first kills the monster Grendel and her mother, and later defends his people against a dragon in a battle that leaves them both mortally wounded.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. This particular version (in the form of a children's poem) is penned by Robert Browning (1812 - 1889), an English playwright and lyricist whose mastery of dramatic verse made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. As a testament to both Browning's skill and the stunning illustrations of Kate Greenaway, this book has remained in print since its original publication. Kate Greenaway (1846 - 1901), was a children's book illustrator and writer, and remains one of the most popular illustrators of all time. Edmund Evans produced her first book ('Under the Window') in 1879, which was an instant best-seller and cemented her pre-eminent position. Kate Greenaway illustrations typically depict charming children in quaint costumes and idyllic scenes captured the imagination of the contemporary public - and continue to delight over a century after their initial publication. Presented alongside the text, her illustrations (first published in 1888) further refine and elucidate Browning's masterful storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's literature. We publish rare and vintage classic illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Number of Pages: 50

Dimensions: 0.14 x 8.5 x 8.5 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: April 09, 2009

Report copyright infringement

by Joy Harjo (Author), Adriana M.

Dimensions: 0.25 x 8.5 x 8.5 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: November 30, 2016

Report copyright infringement

by William Blake (Author)

Poems of William Blake, Songs of Innocence and of Experience and The Book of Thel by William Blake. He published his first poem, "The Battle of Lovell's Pond", in the Portland Gazette on November 17th, 1820. He was already thinking of a career in literature and, in his senior year, wrote to his father: "I will not disguise it in the least... the fact is, I most eagerly aspire after future eminence in literature, my whole soul burns most ardently after it, and every earthly thought centers in it...." After graduation travels in Europe occupied the next three years and he seemed to easily absorb any language he set himself to learn. On September 14th, 1831, Longfellow married Mary Storer Potter. They settled in Brunswick. His first published book was in 1833, a translation of poems by the Spanish poet Jorge Manrique. He also published a travel book, Outre-Mer: A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea. During a trip to Europe Mary became pregnant. Sadly, in October 1835, she miscarried at some six months. After weeks of illness she died, at the age of 22 on November 29th, 1835. Longfellow wrote "One thought occupies me night and day... She is dead - She is dead All day I am weary and sad". In late 1839, Longfellow published Hyperion, a book in prose inspired by his trips abroad. Ballads and Other Poems was published in 1841 and included "The Village Blacksmith" and "The Wreck of the Hesperus". His reputation as a poet, and a commercial one at that, was set. On May 10th, 1843, after seven years in pursuit of a chance for new love, Longfellow received word from Fanny Appleton that she agreed to marry him. On November 1st, 1847, the epic poem Evangeline was published. In 1854, Longfellow retired from Harvard, to devote himself entirely to writing. The Song of Haiwatha, perhaps his best known and enjoyed work was published in 1855. On July 10th, 1861, after suffering horrific burns the previous day. In his attempts to save her Longfellow had also been badly burned and was unable to attend her funeral. He spent several years translating Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. It was published in 1867. Longfellow was also part of a group who became known as The Fireside Poets which also included William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, James Russell Lowell, and Oliver Wendell Holmes Snr. Longfellow was the most popular poet of his day. As a friend once wrote to him, "no other poet was so fully recognized in his lifetime". His work was initially published in England before it was published in America. He is highly regarded for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech. His work frequently employed settings from rural life in New England in the early twentieth century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes. One of the most popular and critically respected American poets of the twentieth century, Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime, receiving four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. Excerpts from the poem itself are laid out side by side with the Old English version on the left and a modern English version on the right, with glosses in the margin explaining unfamiliar words, as well as footnotes to provide further information. Prose summaries are interspersed with the poetic selections. The title of this book may be misleading to modern audiences. It is definitely not for children below the age of 13, but will serve as a great introduction to Chaucer for both young adult and adult readers.

Number of Pages: 148

Dimensions: 0.4 x 11 x 8.5 IN

Publication Date: May 24, 2023
