White's Charlotte's Web was published. It's gone on to become one of the most beloved children's books of all time. To celebrate this milestone, the renowned Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo has written a heartfelt and poignant tribute to the book that is itself a beautiful translation of White's own view of the world--of the joy he took in the change of seasons, in farm life, in the miracles of life and death, and, in short, the glory of everything.

We are proud to include Kate DiCamillo's foreword in the 60th anniversary editions of this cherished classic.

Charlotte's Web is the story of a little girl named Fern who loved a little pig named Wilbur--and of Wilbur's dear friend Charlotte A. It is a story of the magic of childhood on the farm. It is only one event in the long and complicated history of race relations in Marion, a history much ignored and considered by many to be best forgotten. But the lynching cannot be forgotten. It is too much a part of the fabric of Marion, too much ingrained even now in the minds of those who live there. In Our Town journalist Cynthia Carr explores the issues of race, loyalty, and memory in America through the lens of a specific hate crime that occurred in Marion but could have happened anywhere.

Marion is our town, America's town, and its legacy is our legacy.

Like everyone in Marion, Carr knew the basic details of the lynching even as a child: three black men were arrested for attempted murder and rape, and two of them were hanged in the courthouse square, a fate the third miraculously escaped. Meeting James Cameron-the man who'd survived-led her to examine how the quiet Midwestern town she loved could harbor such dark secrets. Spurred by the realization that, like her, millions of white Americans are intimately connected to this hidden history, Carr began an investigation into the events of that night, racism in Marion, the presence of the Ku Klux Klan-past and present-in Indiana, and her own grandfather's involvement. She uncovered a pattern of white guilt and indifference, of black anger and fear that are the hallmark of race relations across the country.

In a sweeping narrative that takes her from the angry energy of a white supremacist rally to the peaceful fields of Weaver-once an all-black settlement neighboring Marion-in search of the good and the bad in the story of race in America, Carr returns to her roots to seek out the fascinating people and places that have shaped the town. Her intensely compelling account of the Marion lynching and of her own family's secrets offers a fresh examination of the complex legacy of whiteness in America. Part mystery, part history, part true crime saga, Our Town is a riveting read that lays bare a raw and little-chronicled facet of our national memory and provides a starting point toward reconciliation with the past.

On August 7, 1930, three black teenagers were dragged from their jail cells in Marion, Indiana, and beaten before a howling mob. Two of them were hanged; by fate the third escaped. A photo taken that night shows the bodies hanging from the tree but focuses on the faces in the crowd--some enraged, some laughing, and some subdued, perhaps already feeling the first pangs of regret.

Sixty-three years later, journalist Cynthia Carr began searching the photo for her grandfather's face.
Author Biography

Cynthia Carr was for many years an arts writer for The Village Voice, writing as C.Carr. The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia that is often regarded as the earliest surviving great work of literature. The Gilgamesh Epic is the most notable literary product of Babylonia as yet discovered in the mounds of Mesopotamia. It recounts the exploits and adventures of a favorite hero, and in its final form covers twelve tablets, each tablet consisting of six columns (three on the obverse and three on the reverse) of about 50 lines for each column, or a total of about 3600 lines. Of this total, however, barely more than one-half has been found among the remains of the great collection of cuneiform tablets gathered by King Ashurbanapal (668-626 B.C.) in his palace at Nineveh, and discovered by Layard in 18541 in the course of his excavations of the mound Kouyunjik (opposite Mosul). The fragments of the epic painfully gathered-chiefly by George Smith-from the circa 30,000 tablets and bits of tablets brought to the British Museum were published in model form by Professor Paul Haupt;2 and that edition still remains the primary source for our study of the Epic.

Number of Pages: 126

Dimensions: 0.27 x 11.02 x 8.5 IN

Publication Date: June 09, 2018

Report copyright infringement

by Alexandre Dumas (Author)

The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, first serialized in March-July 1844. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those being his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all" ("tous pour un, un pour tous"), a motto which is first put forth by d'Artagnan. The story of d'Artagnan is continued in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. Those three novels by Dumas are together known as the d'Artagnan Romances. The Three Musketeers was first published in serial form in the newspaper Le Si cle between March and July 1844. When Alexandre Dumas wrote The Three Musketeers, he also was a practising fencer and like many other French gentlemen of his generation he attended the schools for Canne de combat and Savate of Michel Casseux, Charles Lecour and Joseph Charlemont (who had been a regular fencing instructor in the French army).

Number of Pages: 516

Dimensions: 1.4 x 8.9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: September 07, 2014

Susan B. While the young nation was ablaze with the radical notion that people could govern themselves, "people" were understood to be white and male. Women were expected to stay out of public life and debates. Founding Fathers and their brilliance created the United States and gave it the foundation it still sits on.

History shapes the present, and young learners must know about these important periods that formed the land in which they freely live in today.

Let Dinobibi guide you through a discovery of this fascinating period of the road to independence documented through the American Revolution and the rise of the American Republic

So if you want to learn more about the American Revolution, scroll up and click the "add to cart" button

Number of Pages: 112

Dimensions: 0.27 x 7.99 x 5 IN

Publication Date: November 13, 2019

unboring-american-revolution-for-kids-funny-interesting-concise-guide-to-a-time-of-freedom-tea-parties-and-totally-epic-battles-you-wont-believe-paperback
Unboring American Revolution for Kids: Funny, Interesting, Concise Guide to a Time of Freedom, Tea Parties, and Totally Epic Battles You Won't Believe - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Unboring Histories (Author)

Made for Curious, Smart (and Slightly Silly) Kids (Kid Approved!)

Warning: This book may cause the following effects: sudden bursts of curiosity, knowledge of interesting characters throughout history, and sudden opinion change of history.

Forget the snoozefest history books filled with confusing dates and grumpy dead guys.

Unboring American Revolution History for Kids is the laugh-out-loud, totally visual, totally digestible guide to American Revolution History your kids (and you) didn't know they needed.

Packed with weird facts, brain-boosting quizzes, cool pictures, clickable videos, and activities that actually make sense, this book was built for real kids with real short attention spans and maybe even a few parents who want to finally understand what the history was really all about!

What's Inside This Totally Unboring Book:

-Bite-sized chapters that keep kids engaged without melting their brains

-Timelines at the end to connect the dots (because time travel isn't a real option yet)

-Images and illustrations that are way cooler than clipart

-QR codes or links to videos that explain the good stuff, fast

-Fun activities and short quizzes after each chapter so they actually remember it

Great For:

-Homeschool families who are tired of boring textbooks

-Classrooms that want to wake students up (without shouting "pop quiz!")

-Parents who want a refresher without secretly Googling everything

-Kids ages 8-14 who like to laugh and learn (Edited by a Kid )

- Anyone who thinks "history" should have more memes, more maps, and less yawning

If your child ever said "history is boring " this book is your comeback.

Because history isn't boring. At one end of the table is George Washington in his military uniform, tall, solemn, and presumably wishing that the mashed potatoes had been arranged in neat rows. Opposite him is Benjamin Franklin, who jokes and wears glasses, as well as a ridiculous fur hat. Beside them is John Adams, who was grumpy and bright, writing notes on pieces of paper.

They were not the casual dinner-guests, just like you saw in Chapter 4 when leaders clashed over how to fight the British-they were the chiefs of a Revolution. The army was under Washington. Franklin flattered European kings and queens to send money and armies. Adams was very passionate in Congress to consider independence. They formed the future of a whole nation.

Naturally, they were not ideal. Washington had iron teeth (that is, metal, ivory, and a small amount of hippo tusk). Franklin at one point attempted to electrocute a turkey with electricity (spoiler: it did not work out) and then with lightning (spoiler: it did not work out). And Adams? He was so obstinate that his friends would refer to him as cranky. But without their brains, daring, and even strange conduct, the Revolution could not have had a chance, as we'll see again in Chapter 8 when Jefferson's words help launch a brand-new nation.

Ready to Start Learning Without Yawning? Playing recruits their natural powers of imagination and reduces boredom or resistance. As an inherent avenue to assimilate the overwhelming amount of data received daily, playing emulates the skills they will need in the future. Indeed, creating examples of rivalry and agreement through active participation and visualization captures the essence of playtime and capitalizes on their interpretation of battle. American history is writ in conflict, survival, and success; and fundamental to this history is the contribution of the Founding Fathers, who forged independence, framed the Constitution, and paved the path to freedom. Analogous to these lessons are those of children. Passionate about the American cause--and endearing--Lafayette was accepted into the Continental Army when other French officers were not because of his willingness to learn (and because his wealth meant that he didn't require a salary). The financing of naval technology and expeditions to the Americas would prove a turning point; these resulted in the discovery of the New World, which marked the beginning of the colonization of these abundant lands. The famous explorers Henry the Navigator, Christopher Columbus, Magellan and others each receive chapters, with lesser-known figures like the Venetian voyager, Cadamosto, also appearing in the narrative.
